Workshop on Digitalisation and creation of alternative monetary and financial spaces

Cet atelier propose d'explorer l'intersection entre la numérisation et les espaces monétaires et financiers alternatifs développés en réponse aux objectifs de développement durable.
La pandémie COVID-19 a accentué les défis posés par la numérisation et mis en lumière ses caractéristiques contradictoires. D’une part le phénomène permet, grâce à son potentiel technique, la valorisation des initiatives locales; de l’autre, il peut favoriser des formes de déshumanisation et de prédation, susceptibles de miner la confiance collective sur laquelle reposent ces espaces.
 
L’atelier propose d’aborder la nature contradictoire des processus de numérisation sous l’angle des potentialités de renforcement et/ou de remise en cause des cohésions économiques et sociales. Cette problématique cruciale sera abordée sous trois axes qui se recoupent :

Eva Julin (Banque de Suède) "L'e-krona suédoise, un moyen de garantir la possibilité d'effectuer des paiements pour tous".

Les participant·e·s à l'atelier recevront plus de détails concernant leurs contributions une fois que la sélection des articles aura été finalisée.
 

This workshop proposes to explore the intersection between digitization and alternative monetary and financial spaces developed in response to the sustainable development objectives.

The COVID-19 pandemic has accentuated the challenges posed by digitalization and highlighted its contradictory characteristics. On the one hand, the phenomenon allows, thanks to its technical potential, the valorization of local initiatives; on the other hand, it can favor forms of dehumanization and predation, likely to undermine the collective trust on which these spaces are based.

The workshop proposes to address the contradictory nature of digitization processes from the perspective of their potential to strengthen and/or challenge economic and social cohesion. This crucial issue will be addressed in three intersective axes:

   1. Money, finance and digitalization. Initiatives, tools and logics underlying the adoption of monetary and financial innovations; trade creation/diversion; impacts on transaction costs and social ties; environmental impact.

   2. Money, finance and commons. Impact of the digitization of alternative monetary and financial spaces on economic and social relations between users and their relations with key institutions.

   3. Money, finance and territories. Separation/overlapping of different geographical scales: complementarity/competition of local currencies with national currencies; notion of trust in the framework of monetary plurality.

Two keynote speakers will give a lecture related to the topics of the workshop:

Georgina Gomez (International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam) “Large-scale currency circuits as anti-crisis mechanism”.

Eva Julin (Bank of Sweden) “The Swedish e-krona, a means of guaranteeing the possibility to make payments for all”.

Participants in the workshop will be provided with further details and guidelines for their contributions once the paper selection has been finalised.
