     - Fit Nation? The Pressures and Privileges of American Exercise Culture

Abstract : How is it that Americans who are more polarized than ever have arrived at consensus on the idea that exercise is not only good for you, but that physical fitness is a marker of moral virtue. Yet at the same time, less than a third of Americans engage in the daily recommended minimum amount of exercise. Drawing on her latest book, Fit Nation: The Gains and Pains of America's Exercise Obsession, historian and fitness professional Natalia Mehlman Petrzela explores how exercise evolved from a strange subculture to a social imperative, and how we might build a more inclusive, stronger future.

Natalia Mehlman Petrzela is Associate Professor of History at The New School in New York City. She is the author of two books, Classroom Wars: Language, Sex, and the Making of Modern Political Culture (Oxford, 2015) and Fit Nation: The Gains and Pains of America's Exercise Obsession (Chicago, 2023). She is an opinion columnist for MSNBC, and the host of two podcasts, Past Present and Welcome to Your Fantasy and appears frequently on the History Channel. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post, Slate, The New Republic, The Atlantic, The Nation and more.
